EXTRA MILE- at least a MM

What is an EXTRA MILE?

This term is used to refer the extra effort you put to improve yourself. This extra effort should be consistent and the experience you get out of it should be remembered as long as you can.

You can do it, till as you did the last time, its of no use. Just try a little more, just push it a little more. I know after a point it is difficult to move an extra mile - at least push an extra millimeter(MM). This is where your success is, your confidence, your will power to push yourself to the extreme.

When days pass by and then you will find yourself very confident on your task and you will be the expert in your area, IF you could push yourself an extra mile every time. Ofcourse, I agree there are hurdles. The challenge is to overcome those hurdles successfully.

Try to love your challenge rather than hating it. Once you love it, the thought will tell you how to win it. No problem even if you don't succeed. Just remember this :

Failure will teach you how to get Success.

So learn from your failures, sit and think about it over 100 times and identify where have you gone wrong and PUT IT IN A PAPER. This is important, write it down and don't fear it but practise it and conquer it. It only possible with a strong will power and your effort.

Make this as a habit, then you will see a lot of changes in you and your attitude. If you do then write to me about it.

Out of Failures

Assume that, now, this moment you are just come from a failure situation. What happens in your mind? Just watch yourself.
You may be thinking about - I should have done the other way and not the way I did now and lost. Of course this is correct, but why didn't you try in that time when you are supposed to try it? This is the place where we fear to take a risk. I have won some percent of a game and I wish to follow the same till the end. What if the opponent change his way of approach? He must have planned his new approach according to your current one.
- So please change your approach periodically
What if my new approach fails? Ya there are lot of chances that your new approach might fail. What is the next step you think? Is that the previous one? NO.
- Have another backup approach/plan
What is the probability that the backup wins? Unpredictable, this depends on some amount of luck too. Always there is a safe play for any problem, think of it as the ultimate one.
- Have a safe play approach.

At last one thing remains as a foundation for all these approaches, how confident are you on your play. Forget about luck or environment / atmosphere and pressure. You must be able to implement all the appropriate approaches under pressure. How far you can do this will tell you how confident are you for your success.

Concentration or Interest

Which one do you need? Have you asked this question yourself at any point of time in your life? For many say that these are the same, but for me, these two are different. Now tell me when should you concentrate? Concentration is required when you need to do things at a high point of accuracy. Do you agree with me? If 'yes' or 'no' please post your comments.

To do such a high degree of accurate action you need to concentrate. To concentrate is to focus all your thoughts, your mind, your energy, your body and what ever you can to perform that high degree accurate task. Did that task get through successfully? It is the next question, we shall talk about it later.

If you are not interested on something, then how can you concentrate [i.e. to focus all your thoughts, your mind, your energy, your body and what ever you can ] on that particular one. Actually this is the answer to the latter question of getting the task successful or not. Even though the concentration contribute 80% of your success, the important and left out 20% is the controlling factor is done only with the interest you have on that particular task.

F1 cars can fierce through at great speeds but without control that is the end of that car. Likewise concentration may take you to great speeds but you need interest to control your concentration.

Spirituality or Science?

Spirituality or Science?

What is Spirituality? Is that the subject talking about God or the unseen energy or some thing like that? I have seen a few religions and their beliefs towards their God. Each one has taught me a lot of good things as - Love everybody, don't harm others, treat all beings equal, pray to God for He will save you.

But some religion told all these above mentioned. In addition to it, at the deep those had a lot of hidden secrets, I wondered if those were science of a different dimension. The human who knew, solved some of the puzzled secrets and he becomes one of the leaders called 'GURU' and others follow him. This happens in India, China and some parts of South Asia.

Those guru's are enlightened people, they deserve it because, the puzzled secrets have chosen them, not that the person chose the secret to be studied by him. Unless and until you are eligible, you cannot even make out a hint of those secrets.

Truly all the secrets are published in books and nobody thinks deeply about it. Most of them don't know that it is a life-saving secret. So the word 'Spiritual' is coined to those unrevealed or unknown secrets.

THOUGHT of it...

"Thought", What is the 'thought process'? From where do you get your thoughts? Is there anyone who inspires or anything that inspires you for a thought to arise in your mind? Of course we all get inspired by one or the other every moment of our lives. When you want to become someone great you have seen or from history, they become your role model. You get inspired by them or by the good they have done. Alright how did they inspire you?

They have done it by some good or great doing. To do such a great thing they might have got inspired by someone and so on.. Ultimately it all becomes like a chain reaction. This is how a thought in human mind arise.

If your thought is not from any inspiration them it is all yours, your own intelligence. Have you experienced it anytime of your life? Try it, you too have a brain like Einstein and Edison. Edison did not throw away his idea when he failed around 10,000 times. WHY? Because it was his real intelligence, he deserves to be rewarded for his dedicated attempts to succeed. Why can you do that?

We all have the same brain but have you ever got your own thought from your sub conscious mind?
There is some force teaching you from within you, this is called your intution. This is what thought Edison, Einstein, Michaelangelo, Picasso, Rembrant, Mozart, Beethoven, A.R.Rahman, Bill Gates and many more. The only difference between all of them is, they have achieved in their own area of expertise.

They all had their own ideas that differed from us. So they outstand us all. Each one have got one single idea that had given them waht they deserve. So try to think, not from your mind but from your subconscious mind.

Spirituality for a balanced Professional Life

Spirituality - How can this help in your professional life?
It can help you in many ways,
- it could relax your mind,
- improve your concentration,
- take your level of thinking to the next dimension,
- it can improve your mental strength,
- Intuition and creativity,
- Honesty and trust,
- Personal fulfillment,
- Organizational performance,
- enhance your stability, and much more...

You may be worried about "take your level of thinking to the next dimension", yes this is possible. How did swamy Vivekananda did it? He was a very balanced person and the whole world knows it. He proved himself in United States of America, and from then the US turned back to see the blissful INDIA.

We do not think out of the box, now people are turning back to the olden religious pages to hunt for the facts of today. The human mind needs real relaxation and not the temporary one that we get in this commercial world.

Human mind doesn't know where it is from?

Where did you come from? How did your mental consciousness come into this world?

Where was it before? Where have you born before this current birth?

Where does your conscious come from?

Only spirituality can get you what you want. But how many of us have experienced it? Please help other to experience the real spirituality.

Unanswered Questions ?

Lot of question are kept unanswered. Have you thought about those ? Questions like the following... try answering them and you will come across many unbelieveable facts...

- How come all the planets go in a particular orbit? Why can't they collide with each other?
I agree they go about in an orbit due to the invisible force..What is that invisible force? Don't say it is the magnetic repeltion or attraction or the axis force due to the spin or the gravity-less space. Can you recreate it or prove it by a model, I mean a prototype. We can't till today. Why is that? what is stopping us to do ? Is that the human inability or the superior technology nature has which is not reachable to human? Have you ever thought about it?

We have the rocket-science but this seems to be much more than that...

-How does the brain work in a living being?
It is impossible for us to frame such an algorithm on any system to duplicate a brain, particularly a human-brain. What stores the information in the brain and how is it stored? In which and what form is the information stored in the brain? Science, human-wrote Science..Is it the ultimate Science? don't we have anything more than that to prove the unproved real world?

-How is the human feeling related to his/her physical actions?
Where does the thought arise in a human mind? What is the form in which a human thought arises and where does it end? Based on the thought a human get his/her actions change. How does this happen?
Has the Medical Science found the point where the thought and the physical body meets? This is still an unsolved mystery.
-Where is life in a human body?
When we live how do we live? How are we kept alive? is it any battery cell exist in our body? or the food? If it is the food then why can't a dead body come back to life by just taking the food? What is the invisible power that controls all the real world? Much more to ask ourselves.

Are your efforts wasted?

Are your efforts wasted?

Have you come across such a situation where, you might have thought that all your efforts have gone into nothing? Sometimes it happens, for instance you may go till the last round of an interview by you might have missed the job offer. That's OK, for that have taught you how to handle all the rounds except the last round of interview. Prepare yourself to fix that mistake. This has also proved that you have made it till the last round while some of your friends have been kicked out in the first two or three rounds of interview.

Just try to remember what you have learnt out of this experience, I'm very sure that one day this will come handy when required. I'm talking about the experience you had. Same situation might repeat and there you succeed. So your efforts will not go waste. Of course it might have taken you precious time, but it has compensated with the invaluable experience that no one could have given you.

Can do anything you want

Can do anything you want. Have you ever thought this way? Truly speaking how many of us have this in our mind? Absolutely a few, only those few have done what they want and now they are at the top of this world.

Cut down the barriers
Why can't be you there? Even those persons who has done those great things are humans, then why can't you join in that list? Just think before you do any task that 'it is not rocket science'. This might help you a lot.

Story of possibilities
A poor farmer writes to his son who was in the prison,
"It would have been great if you were here to plough our fields for I'm too old for that.
God has made me work alone even in this time of my life.
Take care.
-Dad"

The son from prison makes a reply as follows,
"Dad for heaven sake do not plough or dig out the fields for I have buried all the guns and grenades under the soil, some how you manage with the money you have and I shall come back soon
-Son"

The following day the entire police department was on the poor farmer's field digging out for guns and grenades, all the field was totally dug out and the soil from the deep is dug out and the field was totally ploughed..

The son from prison write to his dad,
"Dad, this the least your son could do from here.
I love you Dad".

On seeing this letter the farmer cried out and understood how clever was his son and thanked God for blessing him with such an intelligent son.

This is how it happens, you can do anything no matter where you are.

Body is wealth

The human body is the ultimate science. The unseen power has created or help to grow such a magnificent organism. See the genius in the creation. Can we create a human? till now it is not possible. We can reproduce but we cannot make or create a human. Each and every activity of the human body is an art of its own.The human body is capable of reproducing another human infant. Can any machine do that? impossible. This body is most of physical matter.

This human body can generate immense energy through the spiritual science. Spiritual science is not the rituals you do as per the instructions given by your ancestors. Just think and act, there are ways to attain this spiritual path, the real spiritual path, where it is not for money but only for the power of your mind.

Once you come to the spiritual path, then your body gets a new way to go and all your body is controlled by you. Even pain will obey your orders. This is the real spiritual state. So search for the real ways to attain a spiritual body.

For what you have born

This is the question we must answer. This actually adds the meaning of our birth as a human being in this world. Why are we born as humans and not as a dog or a cat or a cow or any other being? We are lucky to be human and in that we are lucky to be born as normal humans rather than mentally ot physically disabled.
Even after we are given good food, shelter and education. How many starve-deaths occur in Somalia every year or every day. This will tell us how lucky we are to be born in a well fed place. Have you ever thought the importance of your life?

Why have we given all the necessarys of life? Its because we must survive, we must not have any trouble or fight for the basic necessities of life. Why? We are chosen to do something else good. Try to figure out the purpose of your life. That is why we are here. You may ask what is it? The real reason for your existance in this world.

Definitely you have come to this world to do or prove to this world that you are worth to have born as a human. It is very simple, try to do an exrtaordinary things in your expertise. Think about the scientists, musicians and all other great men as we call GREAT. what have they done to this world? Why can'y you do something great to this world and leave your name called even after you are gone.

Yamraj says to Karims : !!!Welcome to Hell!!!!

Yamraj Says : !!!Welcome to Hell!!!

A person died and then Yamdootas took him to hell. here is the conversation with Yamraj.

Yamraj : !!!Welcome to Hell!!!

Person : Please let me go back . I don't want to stay here. Why you took me in the hell ? I am very upset.

Yamraj : Come on. I am here to give you fruits of your deeds or Karmas. I know these fruits are bit bitter.

Person : But why me in hell ?

Yamraj : Are you Krishna 's Devotee ?

Person : No.

Yamraj : Are you wearing Tulasi Mala ?

Person : No. Why I should wear that?

Yamraj : Come on. My messenger does not touch the person who are wearing Tulasi Mala.Wearing tulasi neck-beads is bhäva-anukula sädhana (helpful in attaining bhäva). And what is bhava-anukula? In bhava-anukula one observes Janmastami-vrata, Ekadasivrata, Kartika-vrata, wears tilaka and respects Tulasi, for the pleasure of Krsna. Do not think that tilaka or kanti-mala (tulasi neckbeads) are useless, or that we worship ordinary trees or plants.

Person : Oh come on Please leave me. U can check other things.

Yamraj : Ok. Let me see your Vaishnav Tilak marked on 12 places on your body.

Person : What is that Tilak ? and why should any one wear ?

Yamraj : Persons who put tulasé beads on the neck, who mark twelve places of their body as Krishna or Vishnu temples with Krishna's four handed symbolic representations [the four items held in the four hands of Lord Krishna-conch, mace, disc and lotus], and who have ëu tilaka on their forehead, are to be understood as the devotees of Lord Krishna in this world. So My messenger never dare to touch them or took them to hell. My Messenger will watch first, and he will mark those of you who aren't wearing tilaka and say, "Oh, very soon I will take them."

Person :

But why hell for me ?

Yamraj : come on . Tell me for who was jail created ?

Person : For persons who are not following rules and regulations-for those who are causing disturbance to others.

Yamraj : Correct . If we follow the rules and regulations given by our scriptures and vedas. Then why we will bring you in hell.

Person : But leave me. I am a good person. I have lived a simple life.

Yamraj : Oh Ok .I do understand. Are you Krishnaterian ?

Person : what does it means ??

Yamraj : People says I am vegeterian means Lover of Vegetables, Non-vegeterian lovers of Non-Vegetables So the Krishnaterian is. who loves Krishna.

Person : yeah I do love Krishna . I love every God. I respect every God. Everytime I bow my head in front of all temples.

Yamraj : hahahhahha. So then why you food contains beef ?

Person : But that is part of everyone's food. But I did not killed any animal or any person. Whatever I get in Market I have taken that's It.

Yamraj : No You are wrong . People who love Krishna or are Krishnaterian They are also CowTerian means they love cow , They don't eat cow. whole life you have taken Non-veg and for ur food so many people have killed Cows , little sweet animals. If people like you will stop eating meat and non-veg then definately Demons will stop cutting or killing them. It's just because of you guys Demons kills animals for you food.

Person : Oh I am so sorry. I did even know that. But I am a simple guy. I was just a food lover that' It.

Yamraj : hey animals are not food. Who gave you persmisison to kill animals.

Person : Please Please leave me . Please.

Yamraj : Ok. Have you ever Chanted Supereme Lord's Name ?

Person :

No. See You know that at Earth everyone's has busy life. But I never hurted anyone.

Yamraj : Is it ?You ar such a fool. Tell me . Are you Krishna's Devotee ??

Person : No. I am so sorry.

Yamraj : I have also advised my servants never to approach the Krishna's devotees. I have instructed my messengers that if they meet a devotee they should offer their respectful obeisances. So there is no question of a devotee's being promoted or degraded within this material world. As there is a gulf of difference between the punishment awarded by the mother and the punishment awarded by an enemy, so a devotee's distressed condition is not the same as the distressed condition of a common karmi.

Person : Can you explain about Karmi and Devotee ?

Yamraj : The karmis and the devotees are not on the same level. In whatever condition of life the karmi may be, he continues in the cycle of birth and death because the seed of karma, or fruitive activity, is there, and it fructifies whenever there is an opportunity. By the law of karma a common man is perpetually entangled in repeated birth and death, whereas a devotee's distress and happiness, not being under the laws of karma, are part of a temporary arrangement by the Supreme Lord which does not entangle the devotee.

Such an arrangement is made by the Lord only to serve a temporary purpose. If a karmi performs auspicious acts, he is elevated to the heavenly planets, and if he acts impiously, he is put into a hellish condition of life. But whether a devotee acts in a so-called pious or in an impious manner, he is neither elevated nor degraded, but is transferred to the spiritual kingdom. Therefore a devotee's happiness and distress and a karmi's happiness and distress are not on the same level.

Person : But I worshipped all demigods. Please Please leave me.

Yamraj : See Krishna himself told in Bhagavad-gita: Those who worship the different demigods achieve the desired results which the respective demigods can reward. Similarly, those who worship the material energy receive the suitable reward for such activities, and those who worship the pitas receive similar results. But those who are engaged in devotional service or worship of the Supreme Lord Visnu or Krsna, go to the Vaikuntha planets or Krsnaloka. One cannot approach the transcendental region or paravyoma, the spiritual sky, by worshiping Lord Siva or Brahma or any other demigod. Unintelligent people will be attached with demigods for material desires. So tha's what you did.

Person : But Still I am a good person .

Yamraj : Oh Ok. Let me know if you never approcahed to intoxication and illicit sex

Person : But to move in social environment . I did that.

Yamraj : These all are sense enjoyment matters. So You did nothing in the world except your own sense enjoyment.

Person : Please let me go.

Yamraj : Will let you go after your punishment for next birth of Dog.

Person : Oh my lord. why I am being Dog in next birth.

Yamraj : Because while quitting your body. You rememberd your Dog. See in whatever state you will quit , In next birth you will attain the same body. See whole life you loved your dogs and at the death time , u only rememberd him. Tha's why vaishnav keep chanting Lord';s name . They practice to chant Lord's Holy name so at the Death Time they would be able to attain Lord.

Person :

:Oh My God. I did even know that.

Yamraj : Because you never tried to know yourself , your lord, your origin, your whole father. I wonder sometimes, Krishna send so many messengers , sprititual masters , and guidelines in form of Vedas and Scriputres. But you Humans are still on same pace. Tha's why My Hell is full like anything.

Person : I am so sorry. When I will be Human again .

Yamraj : Human birth is very rare. Human Birth is the opprtunity to realise your relationship with Krishna. But all of you are wasting this birth like anything. All of you are engaged in Ur Familes , your business life , job life , marriage , kids , money , girl friends , party and anything. Now after 80 million species again you will be waiting for that. Ia m so sorry for you.

Person : Please Please save me.

Yamraj : It's too late. I cannot save you now.

Person : But Is there any way to get out from this .

Yamraj : See being Karmi , U need to get into this cycle of birth and deaath . I cannot help. But only Krishna can save you. Start chanting his Name. He will save you.

Person : Ok. "Hare Krishna Hare Krishna - Krishna Krishna Hare Hare - Hare Rama Hare Rama - Rama Rama Hare Hare."

Rather than Chanting in hell why don't you start now. Did you wear Tulsi mala ? Can you promise that without having Tulasi mala in your nect you won't drink water. Can you promise that You will always be wearing Tulasi mala in your neck. Are you having Tilak marks on 12 places of your body ?
See any time Yamraj's messenger will come and marks you. So better be ready. Practice the Krishna's Name so at the death time no one will take you to hell. Death can come at any place so keep chanting Krishna's Name at evryplace , every time every moment.

Karma Yoga

In this page are the key components that determine that any action will qualify as being Karma Yoga
"Karma Yoga is the selfless devotion of all inner as well as the outer activities as a Sacrifice to the Lord of all works, offered to the eternal as Master of all the soul’s energies and austerities.
"Bhagavad Gita

Right Attitude
It is not what you do that counts, it’s the attitude while doing it that determines if a job is a karma yoga job, i.e. a liberating job, or a binding job. Work is worship. His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada advises us to "give your hands to work, and keep your mind fixed at the lotus feet of the Lord."

Right Motive

Same as attitude. It is not what you do that counts but your real motive behind it. Your motive must be pure. Swami Sivananda says: "Man generally plans to get the fruits of his works before he starts any kind of work. The mind is so framed that it cannot think of any kind of work without remuneration or reward. A selfish man cannot do any service. He will weigh the work and the money in a balance. Selfless Service is unknown to him."
Do Your Duty

Often "duty" is referred to as "righteousness". You will incur demerit if you shun your duty. Your duty is towards God, or Self, or the Inner Teacher who teaches you through all the specific circumstances of your life as they appear.

Do Your Best

Whatever you have to do, do your best. If you know of a better way to serve, you must use it. Do not hold back because of fear of effort or because of fear of criticism. Do not work in a sloppy manner just because no one is watching or because you feel the work is not for you. Give your best. Try to do such actions that can bring maximum good and minimum evil. Do Karma Yoga increasingly.

Give up Results

God is the doer. You are not the doer. You are only the instrument. You do not know God’s intentions or God’s plans. God is the actor. The Self never acts, changes. It is only the "Gunas", the three qualities, which are playing. The way to realize this truth is to constantly work for work’s sake and let go of the results, good or bad. It is the desire for action that binds the individual. It is the detachment from action that will dissolve the karmic seeds. Detachment from results also means detachment from the type of job itself. There is no job that is inferior or superior to a different job. Don’t be attached to your job. Be ready to give up your job if necessary.

Serve God or the Self in All

Do to others what you would like to be done to yourself. Love thy neighbor as thyself. Adapt, adjust, accommodate. Bear insult, bear injury. Unity in Diversity. We are parts of the same body. Practice humility in action. Beware of power, fame, name, praise, censure.

Follow the Discipline of the Job

Each job is a teacher of some sort. You can learn different skills by doing different jobs. Each job has different requirements in terms of time, degree of concentration, skills or experience, emotional input, physical energy

What is Karma ?

What is Karma

Karma is a Sanskrit term. It means action or deed. Any physical or mental action is Karma. Thinking is mental Karma. Karma is the sum total of our acts, both in the present life and in the preceding births.

Karma means not only action, but also the result of an action. There is a hidden power in Karma or action termed 'Adrishta' which brings in fruits of Karmas for the individual. The consequence of an action is really not a separate thing. It is a part of the action and cannot be divided from it.
Karma, according to Jaimini Rishi, is the performance of Agnihotra and other Vedic rituals.

According to the Gita, any action done with Nishkamya Bhava is Karma. Lord Krishna says: "Work incessantly. Your duty is to work but not to expect the fruits thereof." The central teaching of the Gita is non-attachment to work. Breathing, eating, seeing, hearing, thinking, etc., are all Karmas. Thinking is the real Karma. Raga-dvesha (likes and dislikes) constitute real Karma.

HOW KARMA IS FASHIONED

Man is threefold in his nature. He consists of Iccha, Jnana and Kriya. Iccha is desire or feeling. Jnana is knowing. Kriya is willing. These three fashion his Karma. He knows objects like chair, tree. He feels joy and sorrow. He wills - to do this, or not to do that.

Behind the action, there are desire and thought. A desire for an object arises in the mind. Then you think how to get it. Then you exert to possess it. Desire, thought and action always go together. They are the three threads, as it were, that are twisted into the cord of Karma.

Desire produces Karma. You work and exert to acquire the objects of your desire. Karma produces its fruits as pain or pleasure. You will have to take births after births to reap the fruits of your Karma. This is the Law of Karma.

KINDS OF KARMA

Karma is of three kinds, viz. Sanchita or the accumulated works, Prarabdha or the fructifying works, and Kriyamana or the current works. Sanchita is all the accumulated Karmas of the past. Part of it is seen in the character of man, in his tendencies and aptitudes, capacities, inclinations and desires. Prarabdha is that portion of the part of Karma which is responsible for the present body. It is ripe for reaping. It cannot be avoided or changed. It is only exhausted by being experienced. You pay your past debts. Kriyamana is that Karma which is now being made for the future. It is also called Agami or Vartamana.

In Vedantic literature, there is a beautiful analogy. The bow-man has already sent an arrow; it has left his hands. He cannot recall it. He is about to shoot another arrow. The bundle of arrow in the quiver on his back is the Sanchita. The arrow he has shot is Prarabdha. And the arrow which he is about to shoot from his bow is Agami. Of these, he has perfect control over the Sanchita and the Agami, but he must surely work out his Prarabdha. The past which has begun to take effect he has to experience.

Actions are of three kinds, viz., good, bad and mixed. Good Karmas make you a god or angel in heaven. Bad Karmas throw you in lower wombs. Mixed actions give you a human birth.
Every work is a mixture of good and evil. There can be neither absolute good work nor absolute bad work in this world. This physical universe is a relative plane. If you do some action, it will do some good in one corner, and some evil in another corner. You must try to do such actions that can bring the maximum of good and the minimum of evil.

THE LAW OF KARMA

The Doctrine of Karma forms an integral part of Vedanta. The Law of Karma is one of the fundamental doctrines not only in Hinduism, but also in Buddhism and in Jainism.

As a man sows, so he shall reap. This is the Law of Karma. It expounds the riddle of life and the riddle of the universe. It brings solace, satisfaction and comfort to one and all. It is a self-evident truth. Fortunately, the Westerners have also begun now to acknowledge its importance and veracity. The Americans have now full belief in this doctrine. Every sensible man will have to accept it. There is no other go.

A close study of this law gives encouragement to the hopeless man, to the desperate and ailing. Destiny is created by man's thoughts, habits and character. There is every chance for his correction and improvement by changing his thoughts and habits. The scoundrel can become a saint; the prostitute can become a chaste lady; a beggar can become a king. This mighty law provides for all this.

The Doctrine of Karma only can explain the mysterious problem of good and evil in this world. The Doctrine of Karma only can bring solace, contentment, peace and strength to the afflicted and the desperate. It solves our difficulties and problems of life. It gives encouragement to the hopeless and the forlorn. It pushes a man to right thinking, right speech and right action. It brings a brilliant future for that man who lives according to this universal law.
If all people understand this law correctly and discharge their daily duties carefully, they would rise to sublime heights in the ladder of spirituality. They will be moral and virtuous and have a happy, peaceful, contented life. They can bear the burden of Samsara with patience, endurance and strength of mind. There will not be any room for complaint when they see the inequalities in birth, fortune, intelligence, capacities, etc. There will be heaven on earth. All will rejoice even in suffering. Greed, jealousy, hatred, anger, passion will vanish.
Virtue will reign everywhere. We will have a glorious Satya Yuga now with peace and plenty everywhere. Blessed is the man who understands and lives in the Law, for he will soon attain God-consciousness and become one with the Law-giver! Then the Law will no longer operate on him.

Relate To A Master, Experience Infinity

A saint in India was wont to say, "I am like a drum: As you beat me, so I sound". A master is not what he appears to human eyes. Yet his human appearance is an aspect of what he is. But he is infinitely more than what he appears. For those who see in him a great and wise teacher, he is that. Those who see him as a dear friend, he is also that. A master is like a mirror: Whatever qualities we present to him, he reflects back to us: He is whatever each of us wants him to be; at the same time, he is beyond our mental concepts, unshakably centred in infinite consciousness. Inevitably a master attracts people to him though his one desire is to draw them to God, not to his humanity. Indeed, it is his magnetism that carries the soul on a magic carpet up to the Infinite Light. The devotion a master receives is directed by him to God alone. And he patiently teaches others to direct their love to God also, viewing him as but a window to infinity.

Disciples often focus their devotion on the master as a catalyst for their love for God. By devotion to him as a conscious instrument of the Divine, they open themselves to the flow of divine love. The magnetic presence of a true master, far from impeding their spiritual progress, greatly accelerates it. Much grace comes through association with a great master, even for people who are only vaguely aware of the gifts they are receiving. The benefits vary, however, depending on the disciples' understanding and receptivity. The disciples' attention can often be directed so much outwardly that they neglect to develop inward communion with him.

There are many ways of relating to a true master. Even a master's own disciples limit themselves in what they receive, as long as they define his greatness in merely human terms. Those who seek their inspiration outwardly receive what eyes and ears can absorb, but not the deeper understanding craved by the soul. This understanding comes only by deep communion in meditation.

The devotee ought to look not only to the master's physical form, but commune with his soul. To take inside the inspiration one receives from out-ward contact, however, is to discover that which truly expands consciousness. The guru-disciple relationship is not only of inner communion and of receiving, but of self-giving. Only in a spirit of mutuality can divine love be developed. The way to know God is to still the mind by deep meditation. The way to know Him is to live consciously in His blissful presence. The way to know Him is to commune with Him in inner silence, and to fill the heart, with His love. Superficial disciples make a show of devotion to the guru, but those who are spiritually deep hold his presence in their hearts, absorb his vibrations silently into their souls, and seek his guidance inwardly rather than outwardly in words.

Beware of deafness

Although increasingly popular these days among youngsters MP3 players can
produce irreversible damages to the internal ear.

This is what a study conducted in Britain has found out: people today are
likely to lose their hearing thirty years earlier than the previous
generation, thanks in part to the ubiquitous personal audio player.

Deafness Research UK and Specsavers Hearcare said a national survey in
Britain showed that 14 per cent of 16-34-year-olds use their personal music
players for 28 hours a week.

The study was conducted on more than 1000 people and it discovered that
over
a third of them listen to MP3 players (like iPod) everyday despite having
experienced tinnitus, a ringing in the ears which is a classic sign of
hearing damage. Half (54 per cent) of 16 to 24-year-olds listen to their
MP3
player for more than an hour a day, and almost 20 per cent spend more than
21 hours a week plugged in.

But certainly the most surprising and alarming was the finding that 38 per
cent of 16-34 year-olds were not aware that listening to loud music on a
personal music player can seriously and irreversibly damage their hearing.
Vivienne Michael, chief executive of Deafness Research UK, said: "A
generation ago we would see people going deaf in their 60s or 70s, but
we're
now seeing more people going deaf in their 40s, which is very worrying.

"Many young people are regularly using MP3 players for long periods and are
frighteningly unaware of the fact that loud noise can permanently damage
your hearing."

According to Vivienne Michael loud music and medium, but constant noise are
destroying the hair cells in the ears that pick up sounds and allow
hearing.
These cells gradually die anyway in old age but exposure to loud noises
accelerates hearing loss - which is irreversible.

The louder the noise and the longer the exposure, the more hair cells are
destroyed, she added.

"People don't take it seriously enough. The Health and Safety Executive
says
any noise above 105 decibels can permanently damage you hearing, but the
maximum volume on many MP3 players is up to 120 decibels - as loud as an
ambulance siren.

"We advise a 60-60 rule - don't listen at more than 60 per cent of the
maximum volume and don't listen for more than an hour.

"Another rule of thumb is if your music is so loud that other people can
hear it then it's too loud - turn it down.

"Hearing loss can make life unbearable. We want people to realize that
their
hearing is as important as their sight and protect their ears against any
potential damage.

"We don't want the MP3 generation to go deaf in their 30s or 40s." The
extensive study also found out that 46.5 per cent of all 16-24 year olds
visit a nightclub at least once a week, and that four-fifths (82 per cent)
of people who have experienced ringing in the ears - a sign of hearing
damage - after listening to loud music also go to nightclubs.

The Royal National Institute for the Deaf has warned before about MP3
players and is now sustaining the conclusions of the recent survey.

Chief executive Dr John Low of The Royal National Institute for the Deaf
said: "This survey shows very clearly that young people are frighteningly
unaware of the dangers of listening to their MP3 players too loudly. If
young people don't heed our warnings about safer listening, they could end
up facing premature hearing damage."

"New technology and ever-increasing storage capacity enables people to
listen non-stop for hours – and at louder volumes than ever before. If you
are regularly plugged in, it is only too easy to clock up noise doses that
could damage your hearing forever."

Tinnitus, "ringing ears" or ear noise is a phenomenon of the nervous system
connected to the ear, characterised by perception of a ringing, beating or
roaring sound (often perceived as sinusoidal) with no external
source.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinnitus)

Who is Actually Hearing? (Story)

Who is Actually Hearing? (Story)

There was a village where Bhagavatparaya a was going on, recitation of Srimad Bhagavatam for seven days, saptaha. Many people from neighboring villages came to hear the recitation from seven o 'clock to nine o 'clock each evening. There were two women who were regularly coming. One was an old woman about seventy years old with gray hair. The other was a young girl sixteen years old. She was the daughter-in-law of the elderly woman.

One day in his lecture the speaker sang in Oriya, ananda bolo hari hari, hari karibe upaya- "Chant the name of Lord Hari with pleasure! Hari! Hari! Hari! Hari! That Lord Hari will enable you to cross over the dreadful ocean of material existence." Both the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law heard the speaker, but from that very moment the daughter-in-law started chanting, "Hari! Hari! Hari! Hari!" She put complete faith in those words. Although both of them heard, the mother-in-law did not sing the song.

Why is it that the daughter-in-law was able to put full faith in the words of Srimad Bhagavatam and start chanting,"Hari! Hari! Hari! Hari!" from that very moment while the old experienced mother-in-law could not do so? Because the old lady was not simple, she was crooked. She had no faith in what she heard. This is a question of sa sayatma, doubt. She was a doubtful person. The young girl was very simple. She was not crooked, so immediately she put faith in what she heard and started chanting, "Hari! Hari! Hari! Hari!"

When the recitation finished, the ladies had to return to their home. On the way there was a tidal river that they had to cross. When they had first come the water was knee-deep, but when they were returning it was neck-deep. The daughter-in-law was walking ahead and the mother-in-law was following her. Chanting,"Hari! Hari! Hari! Hari!" while she was walking, the daughter-in-law easily crossed over the river and stood on the other bank. Meanwhile, the mother-in-law was drowning in the middle of the river. She shouted,"Oh! Oh! Daughter-in-law! You are there on the other bank! I am drowning here in the river!"

The young girl replied,"You should chant,'Hari! Hari! Hari! Hari!'" The mother-in-law replied,"You rascal! Are you my master? Are you teaching me? Iam your master! You are my daughter-in-law, Iam the mother-in-law!" The young girl said, "Didn't you hear? That speaker said, ananda bolo hari hari, hari karibe upaya - 'Chant the name of Hari with pleasure. That Hari will enable you to cross over the dreadful ocean of material existence.' So what is this tiny river? Why will Lord Hari not be able to help you cross this small river?"

The mother-in-law got angry. This is a practical consideration of faith and simplicity. The young woman was simple, so immediately she was able to put faith in the speaker's words and by chanting she easily crossed the river. The old woman was faithless and doubtful.

Although she was experienced and old, she was a crooked person. There was no simplicity in her heart. This is the point. The only thing required is to be simple. Give up all of your crookedness and put full faith in Krishna. Put full faith in His words, put full faith in the revealed scriptures, and put full faith in the words of acaryas, sadhus, and mahajanas. Then you will achieve success. This is most important. You should be as simple as a child. By nature a child is very simple. But when he grows up he becomes crooked. Why? Because of association with crooked persons.

Many persons may come to hear Srimad Bhagavatam, but who is actually hearing? To whose ears do these words penetrate and go deep into the heart? There are many that are posing to be hearing, but actually they are not hearing. The words are entering into one ear and going out the other. It never penetrates to the heart because they have no faith. They are crooked persons. They are not simple. This is the only reason. They have no faith in the revealed scripture. They are doubtful persons, so how can they get the result?

Some people will say, "Oh, if we become so simple then we will be cheated. Therefore we will not be simple ,we will be crooked". But Krishna says, naya loko 'sti na paro na sukham sam sayatmanah -"If you have no faith then you cannot get any happiness, either in this life or in the next."[Bg.4.40 ]Why should you be crooked? Will it bring you some happiness? Will it keep you from being cheated? You are being cheated, and you are not getting happiness, why? Why not be simple and put faith in Krishna's words and achieve success in life? Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu likes those who have simplicity. They are natural vaisnavas. Simplicity is vaisnavism.

Yours in service of Krishna,

Vishvambhar

The Real Brahmacari

The Real Brahmacari
So brahmacarya means that you cannot think of sex life, you cannot talk of sex life, you cannot whisper about sex life, or you cannot endeavor for sex life. These eight types of activities in sex indulgence are against brahmacary life. But here it is prescribed that if you want to make solution of the problems of life, then you adopt, you have to adopt a life of tapasya, austerity.
Srila Prabhupada on Brahmacarya

So the tapasya life begins from celibacy, brahmacaryena. Sukadeva Gosvami recommends. Brahmacarya is described in the sastras that:

smaranam kirtanam keli preksanam guhyam asanam [sankalpa advyavasaya].
  1. Smaranam [remembering], thinking of sex life, that is against brahmacarya. Complete celibacy means one should not think of even sex life.
  2. Kirtanam [chanting], talk of sex life. Our modern literature, newspaper and everything, simply full with talks of sex life. But this is against brahmacarya life.
  3. Keli [performing], actually indulging in sex life.
  4. Preksanam [looking], overlooking a nice boy or nice girl. That is also against brahmacarya.
  5. Guhyam [confidential], whispering between girls and boys. That is also against brahmacari.
  6. Asanam [sitting], Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 9: Chapter Nineteen, Text 16 (Translation):
"One should not allow oneself to sit on the same seat even with one's own mother, sister or daughter, for the senses are so strong that even though one is very advanced in knowledge, he may be attracted by sex."
  1. Sankalpa [determination], determination of sex life.
  2. Advyavasaya [endeavoring], endeavoring how to effect sex life.
So when we can stop all these activities, that is real brahmacarya. It is very difficult at the present age. Etad maithunam asthangam pravadanti manisinah vikarita brahmacaryam eda astanam laksanam iti. So brahmacarya means that you cannot think of sex life, you cannot talk of sex life, you cannot whisper about sex life, or you cannot endeavor for sex life. These eight types of activities in sex indulgence are against brahmacary life. But here it is prescribed that if you want to make solution of the problems of life, then you adopt, you have to adopt a life of tapasya, austerity, which begins from brahmacari.
Jaya! all glories to Srila Prabhupada for without his mercy we would still be rotting in the clutches of Maya oblivious to any of the following principles.
BRAHMACHARYA
The human form of life, especially male form of life is very rare and it is the best-suited form for the path of self-realization. Who can afford to miss this golden opportunity to go back home back to Godhead? When we are youthful, we are like a freshly blossomed rose flower with due drops and our life can be completely perfected by utilizing our youthful body, fresh mind and powerful speech in Krishna's service thoroughly. Anything in this world has a nature to deteriorate. So our youthful bodies will also gradually wither away by the power of inevitable time.
When we are young brahmacaris, it is important to know how we should maintain purity of thought, word and deed so that we can use this useful instrument - human body to the best efficiency. Given below are some interesting and important points or information which will inspire those who are interested in leading the life of a sincere brahmacari in Krishna consciousness:
PRESENT DAY DEGRADATION
Man with his boasted intellect, has to learn lessons from birds and animals. Even animals have more self-control than men. Lions, elephants, bulls and other powerful animals have better self-control than men. Lions cohabit only once in a year. After conception, the female animals will never allow the male animals to approach them till the young ones are weaned and they themselves become healthy and strong. Man only violates the laws of nature and consequently suffers from innumerable diseases. He has degenerated to a level far lower than that of animals in this respect.
Even the most virulent poison is no poison when compared to lust. The former defiles one body only, whereas the latter adulterates many bodies in successive births. People talk of brahmacarya, but practical men are rare indeed. The path becomes smooth for a man of iron determination, patience and perseverance. Mere idle talk is of no use whatsoever. We have had enough of idle talkers in the field and on the platforms. Example is better than precept. There is no victory more glorious than mastery over our own mind and senses. When we are self-controlled, we sleep peacefully and awake enthusiastically. We know happiness and contentment. Self-mastery means conquering the body and subduing the restless mind. Until we control the body and mind, we are subject to the slavery of cruel taskmasters, such as lust and ignorance. He who rules his own mind and senses has no need for crown. He is a real superman. It is harder to control oneself than to rule the world. Indeed, he who has conquered himself has already conquered the world. To be self-controlled we must be well established in renunciation. Temptations must be resisted, evil thoughts subdued, and base desires rejected. Only then will we have peace and joy.
WORKING OF THE SEX IMPULSE
The attraction towards women in men is born of Rajas. That unknown attraction and happiness in their company is the seed of the sex impulse. This attraction, which is like a bubble in the beginning, later on assumes the form of a formidable, uncontrollable wave of strong passion or sexual appetite. Beware. Generate the spiritual wave of devotion through Japa, Satsanga, and Vichara and kill this attraction in the bud.
Lust is powerful. It carries a flowery bow equipped with five arrows, namely,
Mohana, Stambhana, Unmadana, Soshana and Tapana - fascination, stupefaction, intoxication, emaciation and burning.
Mohana - one arrow causes fascination in young men when they see a beautiful form.
Stambhana - Another arrests their attention
Unmadana - The third intoxicates them.
Soshana - The fourth arrow causes intense attraction towards the form.
Tapana - The fifth arrow inflames and burns their heart. It pierces the cardiac chambers deeply. No one on this earth, nay, in all the three worlds, has the power to resist the potential influence of these arrows.
Cupid makes intellectual persons, great orators, ministers and research scholars, doctors and barristers as pleasure deer or pet dogs in the laps of young ladies.
A sexual act produces a SAMSKARA (impression in the subconscious mind or CHITTA). This Samskara raises a VRITTI (thought wave in the mind). The Vritti again causes a Samskara. Enjoyment thickens the VASANAS . From the bed of Samskaras and Vasanas in the mind, emanates KALPANA (imagination) through SMRITI (memory). Then comes ATTACHMENT.
Even in a blind man who is a celibate who has not seen the face of a woman, the sexual impulse is very strong. Why? This is due to the force of Samskaras or impressions of previous births, which are imbedded, in the subconscious mind. Whatever you do, whatever you think, are all lodged or printed or indelibly impressed in the layers of the Chitta or subconscious mind. These impressions can be burnt only by Krishna consciousness. When the sexual Vasana fills the whole mind and body, the Samskaras assume the form of big Vrntis or wolf and torment the poor blind man.
It is easy to control the conscious mind. But it is very difficult to control the subconscious mind. You may be a brahmacari or a sannyasi. Mark how the mind conducts itself in dreams. The sex impulses, ambitions and low desires are all ingrained in you and deep-rooted in the subconscious mind. Destroy these dirty impressions by sincere chanting. A man who is established in mental Brahmacharya can never have even a single thought of evil in dreams. He can never have a bad dream. There is a lack of VICHARA or VIVEKA in dream. That is the reason why you get bad dreams, even though you are pure in the Jagrati state through the power of VIVEKA and VICHARA.
When the impurities emerge from the subconscious mind and come to the surface of the conscious mind with formidable force, do not try to resist them. Do not think of evil qualities much. Just repeat the Hare Krishna mantra and try to hear it attentively. There is no other way, no other way, no other way.
You may grow old, your hair may turn gray, but your mind is ever young. The capacity may vanish, but the craving remains. Cravings are the real seeds of birth. These craving-seeds give rise to Sankalpa and action. The wheel of samsara is kept revolving by these cravings Nip them in the bud. By sincere devotion through chanting, root out these craving-seeds, which are laid deep. You will have to dig them out properly in various corners and burn them beyond resurrection.
How To Gauge Your Own Mental Purity
· If a feeling arises in the mind of a brahmacari,
· The company of a woman during times of ailment
· If there is a desire to talk, play and joke with her,
· If there is a desire to took at young beautiful girls,
· If the look is unholy and unchaste,
· If there is a desire in the mind when there is pain in the body for touch by the hands of females.
Remember that lust is still lurking in his mind. There is deep sexual craving. This should be destroyed. The old thief is still hiding. Such a Brahmacari must be very careful. He is still within the danger zone. He has not attained the state of purity. Even in dreams there should not arise in the mind any craving for the touch of a female and the company of a woman. One's purity can be gauged by one's experiences in dream. If one is entirely free from any sexual thought in dreams, he has reached the state of purity. Self-analysis and introspection are indispensable requisites to determine the state of one's mind.
Eradication Of Lust Is No Easy Task
Just as the fox hides itself within the bush, so also, this lust hides itself in the substratum and corners of the mind. You can detect its presence only if you are vigilant. Intense self-examination is very necessary. Just as powerful enemies can be conquered only if you attack them from all sides, so also, you can keep the powerful senses under control only if you attack them from all sides, from within and from without, from above and from beneath. Chanting, hearing, rendering menial service, singing bhajans, dancing in Harinam, taking darshans, discussing in a assembly of devotees - all should be regularly done to redirect the lust from matter to Krishna.
Safeguard yourself against the error or foolishly imagining that you have succeeded in getting rid of lust by the mere fact of having lived a single life for a number of years or experiencing a little feeling of serenity or purity. Temptation or Maya may overcome you at any moment. Eternal vigilance and rigorous Sadhana are very essential. Just as a machine-gun is necessary to kill a powerful enemy, so also, constant, vigorous, powerful Sadhana is necessary to annihilate this powerful enemy known as lust . You must not be puffed up with pride for your little achievement in celibacy. If you are put to the test, you will hopelessly fail.
It is easy to tame a wild tiger or a lion or an elephant. It is easy to play with the cobra. It is easy to walk over the fire. It is easy to devour fire and drink the waters of the ocean. It is easy to uproot the Himalayas. It is easy to get victory in the battlefield. But it is difficult to eradicate lust. Lust cannot be conquered except by the grace of the Lord. Mere human effort alone will not suffice. The divine grace is needed. God helps those who help themselves. Constant Japa and meditation for long periods are necessary to re-direct the sexual energy into the spiritual channel. Extreme patience, constant vigilance, perseverance and rigorous Sadhana are necessary to eradicate the sexual impulses and attain perfect purity in thought, word and deed.
Brahmacarya or purity can be attained only through constant striving. It cannot be achieved in a day or a week. It is doubtlessly powerful and deadly enemy. But your most powerful friend is the Lord's Name: Chant Hare Krishna and be happy.
A rebellion of the sexual impulses takes place when you attempt to control them. Constant Japa meditation for a long period is necessary to direct the sex energy into the spiritual channel. Extreme patience, constant vigilance, perseverance and rigorous Sadhana are necessary to eradicate sexual impulses and attain perfect purity in thought, word and deed.
LUST IN MEN AND WOMEN
A mild desire becomes a strong passion by frequent repetition or frequent enjoyment. The whole mango tree with all its branches, leaves and fruits is contained in a subtle form in the seed. It takes time to manifest. Even so, the Vasana of lust lurks in the mind when you are a boy, manifests at 18, fills the whole body at 25, work havoc from 25 to 45 and then gradually declines. Human beings between the ages of 25 to 45 commit various forms of wrongdoing and mischief. This is the most critical period of life.
Women are more emotional; males are more rational. Though females are more passionate, yet they have more power of restraint than males. After enticing men, they keep quiet. The real culprit is man only. He is aggressive. It is he who tastes the 'forbidden fruit' first. He goes out of control and loses his intellect, power of understanding and judgment when he is under the grip of passion and becomes the lap-dog of woman. When once man falls into the trap or net spread out by woman, there is no escape for him. The scorpion has the venom in its tail, the cobra in its fangs, the mosquito in its saliva: woman has poisoned arrows in her eyes. There are tongues and telegraphic instruments in the eyes of young passionate ladies. They send their love shafts and love messages through their smiling glances to passionate young men and thereby allure and bewitch them. Those young men who have no discrimination are excited by those love messages and become a prey to lust. They become pleasure-deer or sporting lap dogs of ladies, though they possess academic education and hold high position and title. What a shame! Reason, will, intellect vanish altogether. O aspirants! Do not be familiar with any woman. She cannot do any harm to a Viveki who is always on the alert and who sees the Doshas of a woman and who is always absorbed in remembrance of the Lord.
Misleading Descriptions of a Woman's Beauty
Sex is the distinction between male and female. It is a mental creation. It is a KALPANA or imagination. There is no sex in the five elements of which the body is composed. The human body is nothing but a combination of the five elements. The sex idea is the jugglery of Maya . For a devotee, the world is full of Krishna. For a passionate man, the world is full of woman. He falls in love with a wooden post if it is wrapped in a silken gown or a beautiful cloth with attractive borders and a petticoat. Passion is a terrible curse. When a man is under the influence of passion, excitement and the sex impulse or force destroy his understanding and reason, overwhelm his mind and make him utterly helpless.
Have you ever paused and considered what constitutes the 'beautiful' ladies who excite lust in you ? A bundle of bones, flesh, blood, urine, pus, perspiration, phlegm and other dirt! Will you allow such a bundle to become the master of your thoughts? Will you exchange your birthright of eternal peace and bliss for such a fleeting, filthy mess of pottage? Shame on you! Was your will your reason and your discrimination given to you only for such an inglorious end?
Poets have exaggerated the beauty of ladies. They are misguided persons who put young men in the wrong path. Descriptions like "face like the moon" "rosy cheeks and honeyed lips" are false and imaginary. Where is the beauty in the dead body, in old women, in sick ladies? It is the ornaments, silken clothing with fanciful borders, dressing of the hair with golden hairpins, flowers, application of powder to their faces, lipstick to the lips and unguent to their eyes that lend a temporary decoration and artificial glittering to the women. Deprive them of their face powders, their ornaments and gaudy dress and ask them to wear a simple white cloth without any border. Where is the beauty now? The beauty of the skin is a delusion only.
Poets describe in their fanciful, passionate moods that honey flows from the lips of a young, beautiful lady. Is this really true? What do you actually see? The stinking pus from the sockets of the teeth that are affected with dreadful pyorrhea, the nasty and abominable sputum from the throat, and foul saliva dribbling on the lips at night do you call all this as honey and nectar? And yet, the passionate, lustful and sex-intoxicated man swallows these filthy excretions when he is under the sway of excitement! Is there anything more revolting than this? Are not these poets culpable, when they have given such a false description, when they have caused great havoc and damage to passionate young men? Behind the shining skin there is the raw flesh. Behind the smiles of a young lady are hidden frown and anger. Behind the rosy lips lie germs of diseases. Just imagine for a moment that her skin is removed. You will have to stand by her side with a long stick to drive away crows and vultures. Physical beauty is superficial, illusory and fading. O passionate man! Do not be deluded by external appearances. Turn to the eternal beauty of the Supreme Lord and sell off your heart to his beauty!
Passion Blinds The Intellect
This Maya has benefited nobody in this world. People weep in the end. Ask any grown-up householder whether he finds even an iota of happiness in this world. The fly runs towards the fire or lamp thinking that it is a flower and gets burnt up. Even so, the passionate man runs towards a false beautiful form thinking that he can get there the real happiness and gets himself burnt up in the fire of lust.
Just as silkworm entangles itself in its self-woven cocoon, so also, you have entangled yourself in the meshes of your own unlimited material desires. Tear the meshes by the sword of dispassion and fly high with the wings of devotion and knowledge.
DISASTROUS EFFECTS OF SEXUAL INDULGENCE
Sensual enjoyment is attended with various defects. It is attended with various sorts of sins, pains, weaknesses, attachments, slave mentality, weak will, severe exertion and struggle, craving and mental restlessness. Worldly persons never come to their proper senses although they get severe knocks, kicks and blows from different corners. The strolling street dog never stops from visiting the houses even though it is pelted with stones every time.
Eminent doctors of the West say that various kinds of diseases arise from the loss of semen, particularly in young age. There appears:
· Boils on the body,
· Acne or eruptions on the face,
· Blue lines around the eyes,
· Sunken eyes, pale face with anemia,
· Loss of memory, loss of eye-sight, shortsightedness,
· Discharge of semen along with urine,
· Enlargement of the testes, pain in the testes,
· Debility, drowsiness, laziness, gloominess,
· Palpitation of heart,
· Dyspnoea or difficulty in breathing,
· Phthisis, pain in the back, loins, head and joints,
· Weak kidneys, passing urine in sleep,
· Fickle mindedness, lack of thinking power, bad dreams,
· Wet dreams and restlessness of mind.
Mark carefully the evil after-effects that follow the loss of seminal energy ! Wasting the seminal power on so many occasions (for nothing) physically, mentally and morally debilitates persons. The body and mind refuse to work energetically. There is physical and mental lethargy. Those who have not observed the vow of celibacy become the slaves of anger, jealousy, laziness and fear. If you have not got your senses under your control, you venture to do foolish acts which even a child will not dare to do. When a man becomes furious he behaves improperly. He does not know what he is exactly doing as he loses his power of reasoning and discrimination. He will do anything he likes. He will insult even his guru and other respectable persons. It behooves, therefore, that the aspirant who is trying to develop good behavior must preserve the vital energy. Preservation of this divine energy leads to the attainment of strong will power. Good behavior, spiritual exaltation, and Sreyas eventually.
The energy that is wasted during one sexual intercourse is tantamount to the energy that is spent in physical labor for 10 days or the energy that is utilized in mental work for 3 days. Just see how precious is the vital fluid, semen? When Veerya is not used, it is all transmuted into Oj'as Sakti or spiritual energy and stored up in the brain.
Wet Dream & Voluntary Copulation- A Vital Difference
A sexual act shatters the nervous system. The whole nervous system is shaken or agitated during the act. There is excessive loss of energy. But it is not so when emission occurs during the dreaming state. In a wet dream, it may be the outflow of the prostatic fluid only. Even if there is loss of the vital fluid, there is not much draining. The actual essence does not come out during wet dreams. It is only the watery prostatic fluid with a little semen that is discharged during nocturnal pollutions. When nocturnal emission takes place, the mind, which was working in the inner astral body suddenly, enters the physical body vehemently in an agitated condition. That is the reason why emission takes place suddenly.
The night discharge may not stimulate the sexual desire. But a voluntary copulation, in the case of a sincere aspirant, is highly detrimental to his spiritual progress. The Samskara created by the act will be very deep; and it will intensify or strengthen the force of the previous bad Samskaras that a re already imbedded in the subconscious mind and will stimulate sexual desire, it will be like pouring ghee in the fire that is slowly getting extinguished. You should completely give up copulation. Night pollution or discharge is of two kinds - Physiological and Pathological. In physiological pollution you will be refreshed. You should not be afraid of this act. You should not mind if the discharge of semen is very occasional. This may be due to heat in the body or the pressure of loaded bowels or bladder on seminal bags. This act may not be attended with evil thoughts. The person may not even be aware of the act during the night.
Whereas in pathological pollution the act is accompanied by sexual thoughts. Depression follows. There is irritability, languishment, laziness, inability to work etc. Occasional discharges are of no consequence, but frequent nocturnal illusions cause depression of spirits, debility, dyspepsia, loss of memory, severe pain in the back, headache, burning of eyes, drowsiness and burning sensation at urination or during flow of semen.
Wet dreams and spermatorrhoea may be due to various causes like constipation, a loaded stomach, irritation producing or wind producing food, impure thoughts and long self-abuse done in ignorance.
Most of the diseases take their origin in overeating. The evening meal should light and eaten before 6 or 7 p.m. If possible don't take anything other than milk and fruit at night. No solid or liquid should be taken after sunset. When you take milk, mix ginger essence in it. Or boil crushed ginger with milk before drinking the milk. A loaded bladder is the cause of Wet dreams. Before retiring to bed, answer the calls of nature. To relieve constipation the use of enema is most essential.
THE VALUE OF SEMEN
The vital energy, the Veerya that supports your life, which is the Pranas, which shines in your sparkling eyes, which beams in your shining cheeks, is a great treasure for you. Veerya is the quintessence of blood. One drop of semen is manufactured out of 40 drops of blood. Note here how valuable this fluid is!
According to Ayurveda, semen is the last Dhatu that is formed out of food. Out of food is manufactured chyle. Out of chyle comes blood. Out of blood comes flesh. Out of flesh comes fat. Out of fat conies bone. Out of bones comes marrow. Out of marrow comes semen. These are the Sapta dhatus that support this life and body. Semen is the last essence. It is the essence of all essences.
Just as sugar is all pervading in sugarcane, butter in milk, so also semen is pervading the whole body. Just as the buttermilk is thin after the butter is removed, so also, semen is thinned by its wastage. The more the wastage of semen the more is the weakness. In the Yoga Sastras it is said:
Maranam Bindu Patanat Jivanam Bindu Raksanat
Falling of semen brings death, preservation of semen gives life.
It is the hidden treasure in man. It imparts Brahma-Tejas to the face and strength to the intellect.
Modern Medical Opinion
Eminent European medical men also support the statements of the Yogis of India. Dr. Nicole says :
"This vital fluid of man carried back and diffused through his system makes him manly, strong, brave and heroic. If wasted, it leaves him effeminate, weak and physically debilitated and prone to sexual irritation and disordered function, a wretched nervous systeiri, epilepsy, and various other diseases and death. The suspension of the use of the generative organs is attended with a notable increase of bodily and mental and spiritual vigor."
Dr. E.P. Miller says,
"All waste of spermatic secretions, whether voluntary or involuntary, is a direct waste of the life-force. It is almost universally conceded that the choicest element of the blood enters into the composition of the spermatic secretion. If these conclusions are correct, then it follows that a chaste life is essential to man's well being."
MEANING OF BRAHMACARYA
Brahmacarya literally means Acarya or conduct that leads to the realization of the Absolute truth. It means the control of semen, the study of the Vedas and contemplation of Krishna. The technical meaning of Brahmacharya is self-restraint, particularly mastery of perfect control over the sexual organ or freedom from lust in thought, word and deed.
The Eight Breaks In Brahmacarya
1. A Brahmacari should avoid looking at a woman with lustful eye.
2. He should not have the desire to touch her or go near her with evil intention.
3. He should not play, cut jokes or converse with her.
4. He should not praise a woman's qualities within himself or before his friends.
5. He should not speak to a woman in secrecy.
6. He should not think of women at all.
7. He should not have a carnal desire to have sexual enjoyment.
8. A Brahmacari should, without fail, avoid sexual intercourse.
If he breaks any of the above rules, he violates the vow of Brahmacarya. Though the first seven kinds of Maithuna do not cause the actual loss of semen, yet the semen is separated from the blood and it tries to escape when opportunity arises, either in dreams or in other ways. In the first seven kinds, man enjoys mentally. Lustful look, lustful thinking and wet dreams are all failures or beaks in Brahmacarya. Be chaste in your look.
Give up Drishti Dosha or lustful look. A lustful look itself is a break in Brahmacarya. There is internal discharge. Veerya is separated from the system. Only by vigorous chanting of Hare Krishna can we overcome the lower propensities.
Physical Brahmacarya And Mental Brahmacarya
It is very necessary that you should be pure in mind if you wish to be a Brahmacari . Mental Brahmacarya is more important. You may succeed in physical Brahmacarya, but you must succeed in mental Brahmacharya also. Thought is the real act. An evil desire is tantamount to adultery. The desire is more than the act.
When you cannot control the lustful thoughts, at least control the physical body. Physical Brahmacarya must be strictly practiced at first. Control the body when the sex impulses trouble you. Mental purity or mental Brahmacarya will gradually manifest.
If the mind is not rendered pure by Sadhana , mere mortification of the external senses will not produce the desired effect. Although the external senses are mortified, their internal counterparts, which are still energetic and vigorous, revenge upon the mind and produce intense mental disturbance and wild imagination.
GLORY OF BRAHMACHARYA
Brahmacharya is the shield for waging war against the internal asuras - lust, anger and greed. It serves as a gateway to the bliss beyond. It opens the door to the spiritual world if added to devotional service. Even Rishis, Devas, Gandharvas and Kinnaras serve at the feet of a true Brahmacari. 'Brahmacharyena Tapasa Deva Mrityum upagnataa' The Vedas declare that by Brahmacarya and penance the Devas have conquered death. The great Hanuman, Bhisma andLakshman are practical examples.
Just as the oil comes up in a wick and hum producing a bright light, so also the Veerya or semen flows up by the practice of Sadhana and is converted into Tcias or Ojas. The brahmacari shines with Brahmic aura in his face.
Brahmacharya is the blossomed flower of life around which the bees of strength, patience, knowledge, and purity wander about humming hither and thither. By the practice of Brahmacharya longevity, glory, strength, vigour, knowledge, wealth, undying fame, virtues and devotion to the truth increase.
After Dhanvantari had taught all the details about Ayurveda to his disciples, they enquired about the keynote of this medical science. The Master replied,
"I tell you that Brahmacharya is truly a precious jewel. It is the one most effective nectar medicine, which indeed destroys diseases, decay and death. For attaining peace, brightness, memory, knowledge, health and self-realization, one should observe brahmacharya, which is the highest dharma. Brahmacharya is the highest knowledge; Brhamacharya is the greatest strength. Brahmacharya can undo all inauspicious signs" ,
When there is purity, the rays of the mind are not dissipated. Focusing of the mind becomes easy. Concentration and purity go together. Although a sage may say a few words only, a deep impression is produced in the minds of the hearers. This is due to his Ojas Sakti, which is conserved by the preservation of semen and its transmutation.
A true Brahmacari in thought, word and deed has wonderful thought-power. He can move the world. If you develop strict celibacy, VICHARA SAKTI (power of enquiry) and DHARANA SAKTI (power of grasping and holding the Truth) will develop. Continence increases infinitely the power of retentive memory. The strict celibate has keen and acute memory even in old age.
Lakshmana followed Sri Rama for the long period of 14 years though he was perfectly aware of the dangers of the forest. Lakshmana was pure in thought, word and deed. He led the life of an ideal Brahmacari during the 14 years of exile. He never looked at the face or body of Sita. His eyes were ever directed towards her lotus feet only. When Sugriva brought Sita's cloak and jewels - which while she was being carried away, she had allowed to fall on the earth, seeing the monkeys on the mountain - Rama showed them to Lakshmana and asked whether he recognized them. Lakshmana said :
Nahum Junami Keyurc Naham Janami Kankane
Nupuru Eva Janumi fvityarn Padabhi vandanat
"I do not recognize the bracelets or ear-rings; I know only the anklets, for I worshiped her feet alone".
See how Lakshmana revered Goddess Sita as mother.
SUPPRESSION AND SUBLIMATION
In the practice of Brahmacarya what is wanted is elimination of lust, but not suppression. Suppression of the sex urge is not eradication. You can never be free of that which is suppressed. The suppressed sex desire will attack you again and again and will produce wet dreams, irritability and restlessness of mind. No method is as powerful as redirecting all our lust towards Krishna. If Krishna takes over our heart, if our heart is filled with Krishna thoughts, Krishna's books, Krishna's people, Krishna's temples, Krishna's activities, Krishna's service-Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Krishna - in all tracks of your mind, then you can not be troubled by material lust.
Ignorant people adopt foolish methods to kill the Indriyas. They fail eventually. Many foolish aspirants amputate the organ of reproduction. They think that lust can be eradicated by such a procedure. What a greatly foolish act! Lust is in the mind. If the mind is controlled and engaged in the Lord's service, what can this organ do? Some swallow tons of nux vomica to kill this organ. They fail in their attempts to be centered in Brahmacharya. The state of their mind remains the same, though they become impotent by taking nux vomica.
Brahmacharya means control, but not suppression of the sex desire or sex force. The mind should be rendered by pure japa, kirtan and prayer and through such constant engagement like Maharaja Ambarish. If the mind is filled with sublime divine thoughts the sex desire will be devitalized or de-energized by the withdrawal of the mind. We must develop devotion to the Lord and a burning desire to get out of this rotten material world.
From Sex Energy To Spiritual Energy
Ojas is spiritual energy that is stored up in the brain. By entertaining sublime, soul-elevating thoughts through sravanam, kirtanam, smaranam etc., the sexual energy can be transmuted into Ojas Sakti and stored up in the brain. This stored up energy can then be utilized for divine contemplation and spiritual pursuits.
Anger and muscular energy can also be transmuted into Ojas. A man who has a great deal of Ojas in his brain can turn out immense mental work. He is very intelligent. He has lustrous eyes and a magnetic aura in his face. He can influence people by speaking a few words. A short speech of his produces a tremendous impression on the minds of the hearers. His speech is thrilling. He has an awe-inspiring personality. A brahmacari is always careful to accumulate this divine energy by unbroken chastity.
The Secret Of Sex Sublimation
According to yogic science, semen exists in a subtle form throughout the whole body. It is found in a subtle state in all the cells of the body. It is withdrawn and elaborated into a gross form in the sexual organ under the influence of the sexual will and sexual excitement. An Oordhvareta Yogi not only converts the semen into Ojas, but checks through purity of thought, word and deed, the very formation of semen by the secretory cells of the testes or seeds. This is a great secret. Allopaths believe that even in an Oordhvareta Yogi, the formation of semen goes on incessantly and that the fluid is reabsorbed into the blood. This is a mistake. They are in the dark. Their Drishti or vision is concerned with the gross things of the universe. The Yogi gets control over the astral nature of semen and thereby prevents the formation of the very fluid itself.
The body of a man who is truly an Oordhvaretas has the scent of a lotus. A man who is not a Brahmacari in whom gross semen is formed may on the other hand smell like a buck goat.
The process of sex sublimation is extremely difficult. It demands constant and disciplined Sadhana through which the seeds of Samskara will be fried in toto.
There is another sect called "Dhiryaretas" or those persons, who, previously a prey to lustful thoughts and deviated from Brahmacarya, later take to the practice of strict celibacy. Such a person, if he practices strict celibacy for 12 years, can acquire superhuman powers. Medha Nadi or Buddhi Nadi is formed in him. By means of this he can have retentive memory of anything as long as he lives. By observance of unbroken Brahmacarya in thought, word and deed for a period of full 12 years, one is bestowed even with the vision of God, if one aspires for it. He can solve the most abstruse and complicated problems easily. But, this kind of observance should commence before the 32nd or the 34th year.
ROLE OF DIET IN SEX CONTROL
Sattvic Food
Cheru. Havis Annam, Milk, Wheat, Barley, bread, ghee, butter, dried ginger, green gram, potatoes, dates, plantains, curd, almonds and fruits are all Sattvic articles of food. Cheru is a mixture of boiled white rice, ghee, white sugar and milk. Havis Annam is also a similar preparation. This is very useful for spiritual aspirants. Milk is a perfect food by itself, containing as it does, the different nutritive constituents in a well-balanced proportion. This is an ideal food for brahmacaris.
Fruits are great energy producers. Bananas, Grapes, Sweet Oranges, Apples, Pomegranates and Mangoes are wholesome and nutritious. Dry fruits such as grapes, raisins, dates and figs, sweet fresh fruits such as bananas, mangoes, sapotas / chikoos, melons, limes, pineapples, apples, wood apples, sugar and sugar-candy, honey, sago, arrowroot, milk, butter and ghee of cows, tender coconut water, pistachio nuts, Toor Dhal, Ragi, Barley, Maize, Wheat, rice of red paddy whose bran is only partly removed and all preparations from any of these grains, and White Pumpkin are Sattvic articles for keeping up Brahmacarya.
Forbidden Food
Hot curries, Chutnies, Chillies, Sour curd, Over-ripe and Unripe fruits and Salt are not at all beneficial. Onions and garlic are worse than meat. Lemon juice, rock salt, gingers and white pepper can be used in moderation.
Mitahara or Moderation In Diet
Mitahara is moderation in food. Take wholesome Sattvic foods. Fill half of the stomach and a quarter with pure water. Allow the remaining part free. This is Mitahar Brahmacharis should always take Mitahara only. They should be very careful about the night diet. They should never overload the stomach at night. Overloading is the direct cause for nocturnal emissions.
A glutton can only dream of becoming a Brahmacari. The tongue must be controlled first. Then it will be easy to control the passion. There is intimate connection between the tongue and the organ of generation. Tongue is the organ is of knowledge. It is born of the Rajasic portion of the Water-tanmatra. They are sister organs as the source is the same. If the tongue is stimulated with Rajasic food, at once the reproductive organ also gets excited. The food of a Brahmacari must be simple, bland, spiceless, non-irritating and non-stimulating. Moderation in food is very necessary. Stuffing the stomach is highly deleterious.
Fasting - A Purificatory Exercise
Fasting controls passion. Fasting destroys sexual excitement and it calms the emotions. It controls the Indriyas also. Fasting controls particularly the tongue, which is your deadly enemy. When you fast, do not allow the mind to think of delicious dishes, because then you will not derive much benefit. Fasting overhauls the respiratory, circulatory, digestive and urinary systems. It destroys all the impurities of the body and all sorts of poisons. It eliminates uric acid deposits.
The chief object in fasting is to practice Dhyana rigorously during that period, as all the indriyas are calm. You will have to withdraw all the Indriyas and fix the mind on Krishna through chanting His holy names.
Avoid excessive fasting. It will produce weakness. Use your commonsense. Those who are not able to observe a full fast can fast for 9 or 12 hours and can take milk and fruits in the evening or at night. During fasting the internal digestive organs such as the stomach, the liver and the pancreas take rest. All their diseases take their origin in overeating. Fasting cures diseases that are pronounced incurable by allopaths and homoeopaths. Manu, the Hindu lawgiver, prescribes in his code the remedy of fasting for removal of the five capital sins also.
It is better to drink a large quantity of water, either tepid or cold, according to temperament and inclination, during fasting. It will flush out the kidneys and remove the poison and all sorts of impurities in the body. In Hatha Yoga it is termed as Gata-Suddhi or purification of the fleshpot, the physical body. You can add half a teaspoonful of Soda Bicarbonate to the water.
Those who fast for 2 or 3 days should not break their fast with any solid food. They should take some kind of fruit juice, either sweet orange juice or pomegranate juice. They should sip the juice slowly.

Whatever Is Done By Lord Is For Good

There was a king and the prime minister of the king was a great devotee. Always he used to solace or he used to pacify persons who came to him for solacing due to some trouble in the worldly life. He used to say, "You should not be disturbed, disheartened. You do not know what you did in your past life. You do not know what you will do in the future. So by seeing this present loss you should not be disturbed. There should have been greater loss but by the grace of Sri Krishna it is lessened. It is all for the best! It is all for the best! Don't be disheartened" - like that.

Once the king along with his prime minister and other soldiers went to forest for hunting. Ancient time kshatriyas used to go to jungle for hunting. While moving in the jungle the soldiers were separated from the King and the prime minister. The king and the prime minister were going separately in the jungle when the king saw a beast there. To kill the beast the king shot an arrow but by mistake the arrow went through his thumb finger. The finger was cut and there was profuse bleeding. Out of pain he was expressing his sorrow, "I am to fight always. My one finger is cut. It is a great loss." Then prime minister was trying to pacify him, "You do not know what you did in your past life, you do not know what you will do in the future. There should have been greater loss but by the grace of Sri Krishna it is lessened. So you should not worry."

But the king was enraged, "My finger is cut and it is profusely bleeding. When it is a serious loss to me you are saying whatever done by the Supreme Lord is good for me. You can advise me but if suffering comes to you and I advise you what you will think."

Prime minister replied, "It is applicable to all. Krishna takes care of everybody. A greater loss had been saved." The king was enraged and mentally thought "I will teach you". He was going with the prime minister in the jungle when he saw a well covered with bushes and grass from a distance. With the prime minister the king went near the well and all of a sudden he pushed the prime minister inside. The king said "Whatever is done by the Lord is for good." The prime minister said, "Yes without His will you cannot push someone in the well. It is his desire that you push me. Trust me! Trust me! Since he is all good it is for the best."

"Where is your God? I am here and you are here, where is your God? If I leave this place will He rescue you?"

"If Hari protects, nobody can kill him and if Hari wants to kill then nobody can protect him. No power."

"Oh! You haven't given up your dog mentality. You remain here, you die here." When anybody becomes enraged his mind becomes disturbed. The king's mind was disturbed.

In that jungle there were many robbers staying. They worship Goddess Kali for the fulfillment of the robbery. They were successful in their robbery and for that reason they wanted to offer a man to Goddess Kali for her satisfaction. They have brought a pujari and requested him to perform pooja and they went out to bring a man for offering. When they found the king they thought, "Goddess Kali is so gracious. She had sent a person to us. We did not have to go to the village or town. She has sent a man for us." The Dacoits surrounded the king, arrested him and fastened.

After fastening him they brought him to the poojari. According to religious rules before offering a beast they should be bathed. So he was taken to a tank to bathe and afterwards they gave some paraphernalia on his forehead. When the poojari attempted to offer the king he saw that the king's finger was seriously injured and blood was oozing out. If an injured person is offered the result will be reversed. Poojari told "If this man is offered the result will be bad because he is injured."

"Oh! This spoils all our efforts and money. Release this person. Get out!"

When the King came to his own capital he thought whatever the prime minister said was correct. "If there was no injury in my finger my life would have been gone, finished. So I have committed great offense to prime minister. Whether he is alive or not! Out of anger I did this." So he ordered his army of soldiers to go immediately and rescue the prime minister. When they went there prime minister was sitting on the grass and performing Hari Nam . By the Lord's grace there was no serious suffering. He was performing Hari Nam. When he was brought to the kingdom the king bowed down and explained what had happened. "I have committed a great offense."

"No! No! By God's desire you have done. Because of that I got benefited. By pushing me in the well you saved my life. If I would have been with you the dacoits would have sacrificed me instead. We did not know what we did in the past and what we will do in the future. So we cannot see the adjustment."

Whatever is done by the will of the Supreme Lord is for the good of all. Tat te 'anukampa sushamiksa manam. If you can see His grace in every circumstance - in your business, in your happiness then you can get God. If you are disturbed then you cannot. Tat te 'anukampa sushamiksa manam. If you can correctly see then you see in every circumstances God gracing you. We are reaping the fruits of our own actions we should not blame others. We are reaping fruits of our own actions, everybody. As you sow, so shall you reap!

Story of the Advent of Lord Krishna

Story of the Advent of Lord Krishna

By Madhava Priya Devi Dasi

Once, about 5000 years ago, it happened that the earth was overburdened by too many demonic personalities having taken birth in the royal families of many kingdoms. They amassed huge armies and made powerful political alliances with one another.

Mother Bhumi, or Mother Earth, the presiding deity of the earth planet, felt distressed by the burden. She turned herself into the shape of a cow and went up to the planet of Lord Brahma, the topmost of the demigods, to ask for help. The Vedic culture, which is the highest culture throughout the universe, values cow protection, so she felt confidant that her chances of success in getting help would be enhanced by her having become a cow.

She appeared before four-headed Lord Brahma with tears in her eyes, telling of her plight. Brahma was very concerned, but he did not know exactly what to do, so he decided to appeal to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Calling all the demigods and demigoddesses to accompany him, Brahma went to the ocean of milk to pray to the Supreme Lord. In the highest part of the universe there is an ocean of milk, not like our milk that would spoil but milk of a finer, more subtle quality that is almost spiritual. On this ocean of milk the Supreme Lord Kshirodakashayi Vishnu rests upon His serpent bed formed by Ananta Shesha.

The demigods all chanted prayers glorifying Lord Vishnu, and then Brahma sat and silently meditated upon Him.
Then the Lord spoke to Brahma in his heart, telling him that He would come in His original form of Krishna and help planet earth. He also said that the demigods should all take birth in the Yadu dynasty on earth in order to participate in His pastime. Brahma relayed this message to the demigods.

Back down on earth, it came to pass that Vasudeva and Devaki, who were to become the parents of Krishna, were united in marriage. There was a very great wedding procession after the ceremony, when Vasudeva set out for his home with his new bride Devaki. Devaki's older brother Kamsa drove their chariot.

Everything was peaceful and nice until...

Suddenly a voice spoke from the sky for all to hear. "Kamsa! You are a fool! You are driving your sister's chariot, not knowing that the eighth child of this marriage will kill you!"

Kamsa was one of the demonic personalities who had taken his birth in this particular family. He did not hesitate; he was ready to cut off his own little sister's head then and there, in front of everyone, just to save himself from a possible danger in the future. He grabbed her by the hair and drew his sword.

Vasudeva had no weapon with him. He tried to save his new bride, but he had only his wits to use. He first tried to convince Kamsa by good logic and philosophy, telling him that we are not these bodies, and that the soul never dies. But Kamsa did not care, so the only thing left for Vasudeva to do was to promise to hand over the babies as they were born. He was thinking, by then I will figure out something, but at least Devaki will be saved. Kamsa accepted this because he knew Vasudeva was always true to his word.

When the first baby was born, Vasudeva, true to his word but with heavy heart, brought the baby to Kamsa. But Kamsa was so pleased with Vasudeva's honesty, that he had a rare moment of compassion. He said, "There is no need to give me this baby; the prophecy said it would be the eight child who would kill me." Vasudeva took the baby home with him again, but he did not trust Kamsa.

Sure enough, after Kamsa listened to all his advisors, he decided that actually any of the babies could be the one to kill him. He had a crooked heart, so he thought that Providence was also dishonest, and the prophecy might not be dependable. So he went to Vasudeva and Devaki, forcibly took the baby from them, and killed it. Then, just to be safe, he also had Vasudeva and Devaki put into prison.

Each year, Devaki gave birth to a child, and Kamsa killed it. Neither Devaki's tears nor good advice from well-wishing friends could dissuade him from these evil activities. In fact, it usually happened that people who tried to reason with Kamsa became his worshipers, so strong was his demonic charm.
Kamsa also made stronger alliances with other demons, and increased his atrocities against the good kings and princes and the brahmanas.

After Kamsa had killed six of Devaki's babies, Devaki became pregnant again. This time she was filled with effulgence and gladness, and felt that the Supreme Personality of Godhead was within her. This was Balarama, who is the expansion of Krishna and who, in another form, serves Krishna's form of Vishnu as the serpent bed. He came first, in the mood of serving Krishna, to purify the womb so that Krishna could come next.
But Devaki did not give birth to Balarama. Krishna made an arrangement to transfer Balarama to the womb of Rohini, another wife of Vasudeva who had been sent to his brother Nanda, the king of the cowherd village of Vrindavan. Balarama was therefore born in Vrindavan, and everyone thought Devaki had had a miscarriage.

Then Devaki became pregnant with Krishna. It is clearly explained that this conception was pure and spiritual and not by the normal means of conception of a child between a man and a woman. She was radiant, and even Kamsa noticed. His fear increased, while Devaki's joy increased.
When Krishna was born, He at first appeared with four arms like Vishnu, and with fully grown hair, silken clothes, and crown and jewels. This was so that Vasudeva and Devaki would know without doubt that the Supreme Personality of Godhead had been born to them. They had prayed and performed many austerities in previous lifetimes for this blessing, and always they had prayed to the Vishnu form of the Lord. Now they could see that their prayers had been answered. They offered their Lord prayers in a worshipful attitude.
Then He turned Himself into an ordinary newborn child, that is, one with two arms and not formally dressed or decorated. As Krishna, He could let His parents love Him as their little child.
But not for long. Their parental affection caused them to feel fear for His safety, since Kamsa had killed so many other babies. In the night, before Kamsa could learn of the child's birth, the prison doors mysteriously opened. The guards were asleep.

Vasudeva carried baby Krishna out into the night, where the flooding Yamuna River gave him safe passage, and he took the baby to the village of Vrindavan. There he left Krishna in the bed of Yashoda, who was sleeping deeply in exhaustion after just giving birth to a baby girl. Vasudeva took the girl baby back with him, and in the morning he presented Kamsa with a girl baby instead of the feared son.
Kamsa was so evil, however, that he tried to kill this girl baby as well, but she slipped out from his arms and rose up into the sky, where she revealed herself as the goddess Durga, with ten arms holding ten weapons. She scolded Kamsa, and, to make him leave Devaki alone after this, she told him that the child who would kill him was already born somewhere in the world.
Meanwhile, Krishna and Balarama began their lives as children of Nanda and Yashoda in the village of Vrindavan. There are many stories to tell of their adventures there. Later, as youths, they went into the city and Krishna did indeed kill Kamsa. There are many stories to tell of their pastimes after that as well.

All glories to Lord Krishna!!

Happy Janamshtami!

The Real Peace

Hare Krishna

The Real Peace

In the Bhagavad-gita, The Blessed Lord Krishna instructs His dear friend Arjuna, "O son of Kunti, the non-permanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed."

Here is a nice story which explains this point.

There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them.

One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror, for peaceful towering mountains were all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell and in which lightening played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all. But when the King looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest... perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize?

The King chose the second picture. Do you know why?

Because, as explained by the King: "Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart."

THE BEGGER

When Akbar was the Emperor of Delhi there lived a hermit in a hut in the forest. Many people visited the holy man. At one time he felt a great desire to entertain his visitors. But how could he do so without money? So he decided to go to the Emperor for help, for the gate of Akbar's palace was always open to holy men.

The hermit entered the palace while the Emperor was at his daily devotions and took a seat in a corner of the room. He heard the Emperor conclude his worship with the prayer, "O God, give me money; give me riches", and so on and so forth. When the hermit heard this, he was about to leave the prayer hall, but the Emperor signed to him to wait.

When the prayer was over the Emperor said to him, "You came to see me: how is it that you were about to leave without saying anything to me?"

"Your Majesty need not trouble yourself about it.", answered the hermit. "I must leave now." When the Emperor insisted, the hermit said: "Many people visit my hut, and so I came here to ask you for some money."

"Then", said Akbar, "Why were you going away without speaking to me?"

The hermit replied: "I found that you too were a beggar; you too prayed to God for money and riches. There upon I said to myself: 'Why should I beg of a beggar? If I must beg, let me beg of God."

Srila Prabhupada explains: Ashaya means "determination." Generally a conditioned soul has the determination for material profit, but when these desires for material profit are satisfied through performance of yajna, one gradually achieves the spiritual platform. Then his life becomes perfect. Srimad-Bhagavatam (2.3.10) therefore recommends:

akamah sarva-kamo va
moksa-kama udara-dhih
tivrena bhakti-yogena
yajeta purusam param

If a person wants to return home, back to Godhead, or wants to become a pure devotee (akama), or wants some material prosperity ( sakama or sarva-kama), or wants to merge into the existence of the Supreme Brahman effulgence ( moksa-kama), he is recommended to take to the path of devotional service and hear and chant of Lord Vishnu or of His devotee. This is the sum and substance of all Vedic literatures.
